Building Your Support Network

A support network is not a feeling — it is a specific list of people, services, and routines you can name. Writing it down is most of the work.

Map what you already have

  • People who can come at short notice.
  • People who can help with something planned, a week ahead.
  • Services you already use: school, childcare, healthcare, community programs.
  • Routines that quietly hold your week together.

Find the gaps

Look at your list and ask what happens on the worst Tuesday of the month. The gap that appears is the one worth filling first — usually short-notice help or a reliable, repeating block of relief.

Make asking easy

Prepare three specific requests you can send without thinking. People say yes far more often to a defined task with a start and an end than to an open-ended offer of help.

Add paid support deliberately

Paid support works best when it fills the gap you actually identified, at a time you actually need it. Booking it into the calendar rather than keeping it in reserve is what makes it useful.

Review it twice a year

Networks decay quietly as jobs, schools, and seasons change. A short review twice a year keeps the list honest.
